Friday night took us to Oxford, to play the Jericho Tavern. In, predictably enough, a bit of Oxford called Jericho! Ben duly arrived to pick me up, with Sid already in tow. He then proceeded to educate us with some music by Damon Albarn, which I'm sure I should have enjoyed in an academic, intellectually stimulated kind of way, but instead I just found it mildly irritating! I'm not entirely sure I was alone in that….
We programmed my Tom Tom to take us to the venue, and I then kept telling Ben to go a different way. He, not surprisingly, had difficulty trusting my judgement, as I am usually the one saying "Turn left here. No not that left, the other left". In spite of this weakness Ben managed to trust me, and we got there. Drove round in circles for half an hour to find a space into which Ben's hearse would fit, but we did get there eventually.
We went upstairs to the venue, and explained the absence of our drummer. This technical hitch overcome we got down to the serious business and went to the bar. To pass the time whilst waiting the bar staff has cunningly put a load of anagrams of bands on the wall behind the bar. This caused some frustration, as it took a while for us to work out that quite a few of the letters had been removed to write a 'Seasons Greetings' message at the bottom of the board. Ben was cross, and Neil slightly less so. I had spent most of the time watching the door, as my parents were coming to see us play for the first time, and I was actually surprisingly nervous. My parents are generally not big fans of my work!!
We soundchecked without too much excitement, and then settled down to wait our turn and the arrival of my parents! Due to my slight distraction I wasn't concentrating too hard on the band before us ('Seven 'O' Clock Junkies' - Ed), but I think they were pretty good! Ben then asked if my Mum had a green coat, which she does, and he told me that an older taller version of me had just walked in. Thanks Ben! Fairly soon after that we hit the stage, and played pretty well, apart from a couple of minor hitches in 'Leave Me Alone' (mainly me not singing an entire verse). I am blaming Ben for this, as he introduced it as 'the erection section' with my Dad in the audience. Nice.
We sat down following our set to watch the band after us ('The Pineapple Thief' - Ed), and they played quite a long set, so sadly we couldn't hang around till the end, but they seemed OK, if a little samey.
All in all another good Brassneck night out, we just need to get back to a great venue for a full electric set, with Mark all present and correct!
Kat.
